N otre Dame faculty and s tu d en ts have a re sp o n s ib ility to c re a te an environment of intellectual discussion that reflects the Catholic character of the U niversity . N athan H atch, the re c e n tly a p p o in te d U n iv e rs ity P ro v o s t, — ..... presented this view of Notre Dame’s mission in h is in s ta l la t io n address yesterday. Hatch spoke to fac­ ulty , a d m in is tra to rs an d s tu d e n ts a b o u t how he believes the University can achieve his vision. “One can­ not renew an institu ­ tion, only people," he sa id , “T he fa c u lty m u st w ork to c h a l ­ lenge students, and I prom ise to foster an e n v iro n m e n t w h e re the they can do that." The provost sets h ir­ ing policies for faculty and staff and deals with much of the d a y -to -d a y a d m in is t r a t io n of the University. In his address, Hatch out­ lined his six priorities for the coming years. “First,” he said, “we need to invest in centers of excellence.” He indicat­ ed that the University needs to focus its resources on the specific programs in which Notre Dame could become the best in the country— if not the world. “We need to be willing to take risks on program s th a t we excel in. The process should also pay special a tten tion to a re a s th a t cross d isc i­ plines,” he added. The decision of which program s to ( 1 1 7 e have many W dreams, but we must temper these dreams with realism and humility. We are not perfect. We are a human community and have our problems. I hope that we will not paper-over those prob­ lems but address them .” N a th a n H atch focus on, h o w ev er, w ould d e p e n d heavily on input from the various fac­ ulty departm ents. In his second priority, Hatch focused on u n d e rg ra d u a te education . “We must revitalize undergraduate educa­ tion by insuring the creative process in the classroom , engaging students, c h a lle n g in g th e ir — — — — m inds,” he said. He announced three in itia tiv e s th a t have a lread y been im p le ­ m e n te d to w a rd th e a c h ie v e m e n t of th is goal. The f irs t w as th e c re a t io n of th e C en te r for T each ing and Learning, w here faculty m em bers can go to im p ro v e th e ir te a c h in g sk ills . Second, he introduced a n ew ro u n d of departm ental reviews, which focus on under­ graduate teaching. Finally, H atch said th a t F a th e r Tim Scully, Vice President and Senior Associate Provost of the University, has agreed to give over­ sight to the entire undergraduate pro­ gram. “As a third priority, we have to go the second mile to rec ru it excellent faculty and students,” Hatch said. He noted tha t the faculty was a pivotal com ponent of the p u rsu it of excel­ lence and sa id th a t th e U niversity plans to h ire 150 new faculty m em ­ bers. “We have to go beyond convention­ al hiring m ethods," he said, “1 plan on ask ing d ep artm en ts to se t aside
